Several public school districts serve Carlsbad
with some children attending public schools in the neighboring
towns of San Marcos and Encinitas. Academic rankings are generally
in the 80s and 90s, among the tops in the state.
Voters in 1997 approved a $26.5 million bond for the Carlsbad School District, the money to be used to renovate and modernize facilities. About $9 million of the money is to be spent on adding classrooms and more gym space to Carlsbad High School. Another elementary school is planned for the La Costa area. La Costa Canyon High School, located on the south side, opened in 1996. La Costa Canyon High is part of the San Dieguito Union High School District. Carlsbad also has six private schools.
